I'm sure the others were good, and maybe could have been great if as you said the controller were better/easier/etc, but I think more, they just didn't have the momentum or timing of the first two. The Monkey Ball 2 was primarily that same audience, and a snowball affect.

The fact they tacked on all the multi player options also drove people to want more controllers right from the get go. Lead to lots of somewhat captive audience, lots of people embracing it, and it worked because it was very well polished and fun. But like with the N64 before it, it was a game with a 'unique mechanic' (nothing will ever beat how Mario 64 embraced the analog controller and made 3-D fun), but Monkey Ball did offer a unique experience no one had quite seen before and couldn't get anywhere else, and in a "launch" title.

It even had "Super" in the title (coincidence I'm sure). I remember the first was either a launch title or right at the start, and since there was no Mario on launch, it sort of fit that gap. I feel like, much of the success of the first two was how it fit the Gamecube. It's funny, they are so underrated that I didn't even know they existed. I feel that if fans actually put in the time to get use to the controls, then they would have a fun time. The Mobile version of Super Monkey Ball: Sakura Edition is a remake of Super Monkey Ball 2, but everything Sakura themed the the minigames have the SMB2 musics in them, but once again, overlooked cause most fans hate Gyro Controls and playing mobile games. In Banana Splitz (Vita), the Beginner stages are remakes of the Beginner stages in Super Monkey Ball 1, along with the remixed music of Jungle. Touch and Motion Controls, which were great ideas to give Monkey Ball a challenge, but everyone wanted Analog Controls cause the felt more comfortable to use and blame the other controls cause they had a bad time with them.Īnd there were nods and remakes to the classic stages which were overlooked at. Many fans talk about how fantastic the first two games were but calls every after it trash for some reason, and I believe that it’s because of the gimmick Nintendo had with the DS and Wii.
